The Hidden Rules for Marketing in a New Market - A Cultural Perspective

Dr. Royce Yuen
Chairman, Ogilvy Hong Kong
Chairman, HK4As (The Association of Accredited Advertising Agencies of Hong Kong)

While the law is about what can and cannot be done, marketing is about what should and shouldn't be done. What works well in one market may not necessarily work in another market. Companies that fail to understand and respect the local culture when entering a new market are deem to fail. In the marketing world, the consumers are the prosecutor, the jury and the judge. They decide whether a brand is guilty or not. The penalty can be as serious as being forced to withdraw completely from the market. The speaker will share the "Ten Principles" on how brands can gain acceptance in a new community, something basic yet often overlooked by many marketers.

About the speaker:
Dr. Royce Yuen is the Group Chairman of Ogilvy Hong Kong, a leading communication group that offers integrated marketing communications solutions.

Under his leadership, the agency was named Agency of the Year by Campaign Brief Asia three years in a row. It is also the biggest winner of EFFIE Advertising Effectiveness Award in five consecutive years.

Dr. Yuen is also the Chairman of the HK4As and is committed to upgrade the industry practice. He is also very active in his personal time supporting voluntary work. He is serving on the advisory boards for numerous not-for-profit organizations including the HK Trade Development Council, Commerce and Economic Development Bureau of the HKSAR as well as the HK Academy for Performing Arts, etc.

Dr. Yuen is also actively involved in the education field. He holds part-time teaching positions at the HK Baptist University and the HK Polytechnic University. He has been lecturing Marketing at a post-graduate level for eight years. He also serves as an advisor to the HKU (BEA HKUSU), CUHK (SCS) and the Baptist U (Communications).

One of the more recent recognitions he received is the "HK's Top Ten CEO Award" organized by the HK Metro Radio and the Zonta Club. Last year, Dr. Yuen was awarded the National Agency Head of The Year runner-up by Media in the Asia Pacific region.
