From Products to Services: An Opportunity for Hong Kong Marketers
(Evening Seminar in English)
Alongside
other developing economies like India and Brazil, China's
ambition to become a more service-based economy and lessen
its reliance on manufacturing is becoming clearer by the day.
A year ago, for instance, the mainland government announced
major initiatives aimed at increasing the service sector's
contribution to 50% by 2020. There would be incentives for
organisations in it and professional services in particular.
At the same time, manufacturing in China is under pressure.
The forces experienced by many in the West, to evolve from
products to service providers, are starting. Yet the transition
is profound and difficult, and can be damaging. Business leaders,
educators and policy makers on the mainland will need experienced
and trained help if they are not to make the mistakes of some
Western businesses.
The move from products to services involves major change,
which Hong Kong businesses are well positioned to advise Chinese
manufacturers on, and also assist access to the vast service
markets of the West.
In this talk Laurie will:
- Outline
the move from products to services in different economies.
- Discuss
international trade in services and the opportunities in
countries like mainland China.
- Show
some of the mistakes made in the West.
- Outline
how the marketing of services can contribute to strategy,
marketing communications, brand and new product development.
About
the Speaker: Mr. Laurie Young FCIM
Laurie is an international services specialist and author.
His book 'From Products to Services' offers valuable insight
to both the issues and opportunities inherent in this move
to a service economy. He examines the experience of manufacturing
businesses that have changed into service providers over
the past twenty years, including some of the world's most
famous companies such as Ericsson, Nokia, IBM, Unisys and
GE. Addressing, in particular, the major changes involved
(to business operations, management, finance, sales, distribution
and marketing) and the mistakes to avoid. A transition that
is far from simple, yet if managed correctly, offers vast
opportunity.
